Clive Eric Cussler (July 15, 1931 – February 24, 2020) was an American adventure novelist and underwater explorer. Many of his adventure novels, portraying the character of Dirk Pitt, have been on the New York Times fictional list more than 20 times. Kessler was the founder and chairman of the National Underwater and Naval Agency (NUMA). He has found more than 60 shipwrecks and a significant number of other underwater wrecks. He was the sole author or lead author of more than 80 books.
His novels have inspired other fictional works, such as movies, television, other novels, and video games.
He was awarded the Eagle Scout at the age of 14. He attended City College for two years and later joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. During his tenure in the Air Force, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as an Aircraft Engineer and Flight Engineer in the Military Air Transport Service (MATS).
